Overview
The County Tax Appeal Board is an independent Board appointed by the County Commissioners and not connected with the Department of Revenue.
Property Tax Appeal
A County tax appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date on your notice of classification and appraisal from the Department of Revenue or 30 days after you receive a decision from the Department of Revenue following an informal review under Form AB-26. The appraisal is usually mailed in June. This is not the tax bill you will receive from the County, which is usually sent in late summer. Taxpayers must appeal within 30 days of the appraisal notice before the tax bill arrives.
If you disagree with the property classification or value identified on the Department of Revenue's notice, you have the right to request the department to conduct an informal classification and appraisal review once each appraisal cycle. To request an informal review of your property, complete the Request for Informal Review (Form AB-26). Mail this form to or file it in person with the Department of Revenue office in the county in which your property is located.
You may choose to appeal your classification and appraisal notice directly to your local County Tax Appeal Board rather than first filing a Form AB-26. If you choose to appeal directly to the CTAB, fill out the Property Tax Appeal Form. Mail this form to or file it in person with the county clerk and recorder within 30 days from the date on the classification and appraisal notice. You can access the proper form to use on the link to the left. Appeal forms may also be obtained through your county clerk and recorder. All appeal forms are filed with the county Clerk and Recorder in the county where the property is located, not with the Department of Revenue.
The county tax appeal board secretary will be notified of your appeal and schedule a hearing in the county seat of the county in which the property at issue is located, generally between July 1 and December 31.
Be sure to bring sufficient copies of the materials you intend to present to the county tax appeal board:
The county tax appeal board will issue a decision on your appeal, which will be mailed to you.
